How I Found the Courage To Start My Own Business

Finding Stillness In Bali

Just about four years ago, I had an opportunity to visit a place I had dreamed of traveling to and exploring - Bali, Indonesia. I found myself on a yoga retreat with two of my favorite yogis who directed our group to be guided by our intuition throughout the course of the week: if we felt like sleeping in and not getting up for a 6:00am meditation, or wanted to go venture around the island for a day instead of participating in the retreat activities--it was all OK.

With their permission and my own, I found that even the thought of venturing outside of the (gorgeous) retreat setting exhausted me. At first, I felt guilty for being in a new place, a new country and not having the desire to explore. Then, I slowly let myself feel at ease with lingering around the space I was in for the day, for a few days, and then for most of the time I was there. I felt comfort in not pushing myself to go beyond what I needed in that moment.

From the stillness of that space, I poured my thoughts into my journal every single day, processing whatever came up and letting it just be.

In my recent chat with coach Tricia Sexton, on her podcast “Messy Action”, I began to realize the connection from that moment in time to my life now. After I found that stillness in Bali and was able to really visualize what I saw for myself in the next phase of my life, I made a bold decision to leave my career in education and start my own business. I didn't have a clear plan, and that scared me a little but less so because of the practice I had in listening to the voice inside of me. I knew I needed a change. I didn't know what it was. But I trusted that feeling and went with it.
