The EOS Life: Building a Life (and Business) You Love

Many of the structures I use in my work with clients is heavily inspired by the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS, aka Traction). When I started using this process more than five years ago, I became obsessed with its simplicity and ability to take the most messy, convoluted situations and turn it into something clear and doable.

And I wasn’t the only one...

In the years since, EOS has become a buzzword for organizations seeking alignment. And those who have used it speak about how it has also shaped the way they view life - which inspired a book dedicated to how the EOS process can be used and applied to our non-business endeavors as well (read: The EOS Life by Gino Wickman).

Wickman starts by saying, “Suddenly, I realized that all of us were doing what we loved, with people we loved, making a huge difference in the world, being compensated appropriately for the value we were delivering, and having the time to pursue other passions.”

I, of course, have furthered my study into the subsequent EOS books, and in the very first chapters, the reader is asked to respond to the following questions, and—in the spirit of transparency—have shared my personal responses to the prompts below.

Doing what you love…

I love connecting with people. I am passionate about being of service and guiding clients to reach "aha" moments where they gain clarity and insight.

With people you love...

I believe in surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who share my values. When we show up authentically and consistently striving to do good, then we naturally attract people who inspire and uplift us, fostering meaningful and fulfilling relationships.

Being compensated appropriately...

Speaking generally, to me, receiving compensation for my work provides me with the financial security I need, while allowing me to maintain the freedom of flexibility for my creativity to flow.

Making a significant difference...

Making a significant difference to me involves bringing clarity to situations where there is confusion and facilitating harmony within teams to where there is tension. I take pride in creating clear, actionable plans that guide individuals towards their goals and help them navigate challenges, which then fosters the ability to create deeper connections within their partnerships.

With time for other passions…

In all honesty, I have been LOVING working on my business. However, with more time, I am eager to create more with my hands–through some type of craft (woodworking, art, etc), to cook and travel and spend time with family as much as possible. In the meantime, every morning I make time to move and get time outside. On weekends, I love cooking and hosting dinners with friends.

I love this exercise, because it reminds me that I am human. And while I know that I CAN work hard, it doesn’t mean that has to be my whole life. I AM working hard, so that I can enjoy the freedom and flexibility that comes with financial security.

I encourage you to respond to the same prompts as I did, and see what comes up for you. You’ll either be surprised and see something you didn’t know was there, or feel totally in line with where you are now.
